One of the reasons for leaving my good job as a development manager at UBS (one of those large investment banks that people love to hate these days) was to be free to seek out more interesting and personal work. This page lists the kind of work that I am skilled at and looking for. I am also open to new challenges, even if not listed below. Don’t be shy to contact me if you have a proposition or a question.
Being a nomad imposes some geographical constraints on my work. Most of my jobs are done remotely, requiring only that I have reliable internet access. This works really well. I do sometimes accept work that requires me to be in a specific place, but only if the work is no longer than six months. (Or spectacularly interesting.)
So please review the services I offer below. And trust that if I take on a job, I will do it efficiently, professionally and with a great deal of imagination and attention to detail.
Web Design
My most frequent kind of work is web design. I have developed everything from small personal blogging platforms to corporate sites and e-commerce stores. I am skilled at all relevant web technologies of today, but where I truly shine is my attention to my clients. I listen to what they need. I guide them through their questions and decisions. Together, we develop the solution that best fits their needs. Many web designers do not take this time.
Instead of listing qualifications, I invite you to inspect my previous web designs. If you need a site, please contact me.
Software Engineering
I’m a programmer at heart. My formal education is in Software Engineering (London’s top university, Imperial College) and I worked at UBS Investment Bank for five years after graduation. At UBS, I worked my way up from intern to running my own development team in five years.
I am now an independent contractor. I always look for interesting IT projects to be involved in. My main skills lie with Java and other Object Oriented languages, but I have also worked with databases, app development (especially for Android), WordPress plugin development (PHP etc) and project management.
Instead of listing languages, I’d like to emphasize my solid university grounding in everything computational which allows me to quickly pick up new languages, think through problems systematically and work in teams (even remotely).
If you need a first-class developer, don’t hesitate to contact me and we can discuss your project.
Writing and Public Speaking
Although I’m not a published author, I do consider myself a writer, and I hope that this blog supports that claim. My topics of choice are the nomadic lifestyle and the importance of actively choosing how to live and to do so with bravery. However, I’d be glad to put my pen to whatever writing task that you may have, unless the topic is entirely contrary to my values, such as kicking puppies or banning chocolate.
If I am in your neighbourhood, then I am also keen to give talks on any of the topics you’ve found on this blog. Do you have a waiting audience? Let me know.
House Sitting
I am always looking for accommodation that is more personal and interesting than the dull hotel room. Many of my destinations have sprung from offers of house sitting. If you need to take time off to follow your own nomadic urges, but you are not quite ready to sell that house of yours, why not hire me to take care of your house and pets while you are away?
